What is Title IX?
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is a federal civil rights law that prohibits sex discrimination in education programs or activities that receive federal funding, including athletic programs.聽 Title IX holds schools liable for sex discrimination, including sexual harassment and sexual assault.
鈥淣o person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.鈥�
Under Title IX, discrimination on the basis of sex can include sexual harassment, rape, dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

Title IX Jurisdiction
The above policy and procedures聽protect students and employees, in connection with all the academic, educational, extracurricular, athletic, and other programs of the District, whether those programs take place in the District鈥檚 facilities, a District bus, or at a class or training program sponsored by the District at another location.
Jurisdictional Requirements 鈥� Application of Procedures
Title IX procedures apply if the conduct meets the following three jurisdictional requirements:
- The conduct took place in the United States;
- The conduct took place in a District 鈥渆ducation program or activity.鈥� 聽This includes locations, events, or circumstances over which the District exercised substantial control over both the Respondent and the context in which the harassment occurred, including on-campus and off-campus property and buildings the District owns or controls or student organizations officially recognized by the District own or control.
- The conduct meets the definition of Title IX 鈥渟exual harassment.鈥�
